In this painting, I’ve captured myself backstage, deeply immersed in the act of creation, painting a self-portrait of a moment in my past. The scene on the canvas shows me, years ago, as a cowboy in Arizona, boots caked with dust and sand. From those boots in the painting, sand is pouring out, each grain symbolizing the grit and weight of my beginnings in showbiz, and the long road I’ve traveled since. As I work, I can just make out the glow of the stage lights through the curtains.
